Velo (or velum) – means the palate

Cardio – means the heart is affected

Facial – individuals with VCFS have similar facial features

Syndrome – is a collection of similar findings

FISH test – Fluoroscence In Situ Hybridisation – the name of the test used to diagnose VCFS. It is done by taking a blood sample from the individual which is then analysed (using DNA markers)
